About Springfield handguns
The Springfield Armory was the main center for the manufacture of U.S. military handguns and the site of many important technological advances from 1794 to 1968. The other major center was Harpers Ferry.
Springfield has made a quantum jump with its fresh "Loaded" 1911s. Having won the FBI's coveted Hostage Rescue Teams handgun contract, Springfield now produces all of their 1911 model handguns with many of the same proprietary FBI features. The result is outstanding accuracy, reliability and incredible worth.
Springfield Armory - quickly became a center for discovery and development. In 1819 Thomas Blanchard developed a special lathe for the consistent mass production of handguns stocks. The lathe enabled an unqualified workman to fast and easily turn out identical irregular shapes. A friction wheel that follow the contour of the metal rifle prototype, and the cutting wheel that imitate the actions of the friction wheel to make an exact copy of the pattern in wood. In the 1840s the old flintlock gave way to a percussion ignition system that increased the reliability and simplicity of long arms.
In 1974, the Springfield Armory brand name was purchased by Robert Reese, who created a new corporation to manufacture M1A rifles. This corporation now own and operated by Reese's sons, manufactures a wide array of Springfield handguns under the Springfield Armory name.
Springfield Armory took main features from the Glock, 1911 and SIG Sauer handguns. They integrated the 1911's grip angle and grasp safety, the Glock polymer frame and striker-fired ignition, and the barrel lock up and takedown system of the SIG Sauer.
