S&W Handgun Model 1 (1857)

The first revolver (handgun) made by Smith & Wesson's was the first revolver ever made. It was the first handgun, which used a self-contained cartridge (Jacques Flobert patented that in France in 1846). Hence, the 1857 handgun model from Smith and Wesson was the first gun to combine those conceptions. This model was introduced in 1857, and became the first cartridge revolver. It is also important to mention that the S&W No. 1 load was the first commercial American metallic cartridge. (Today we call it a .22 Short and it has been in nonstop manufacturing for 145 years.) It is believed to be a start of modern armory, since all the handguns (revolvers), and all American cartridge ammunition, follow from that moment.
