At the age of 28 years Carl William friend Walther in the autumn 1886 created his own handgun, whose name attained worldwide reputation during the last century. At the beginning of specialized in hunt cans and disk rifles still, the special attention of the company was directed already soon toward the production and development of Walther handgun (PP). The foundation stone was set for 1908 with the Walther model 1 in the caliber 6.35 mm of Browning. The models 1 to 9 are today no longer particularly well known. First world success became finally the Walther PP (police pistol), which came 1929 on the market. It was developed by Fritz Walther, which had taken over the family business after the death of his father Carl 1915, together with his brothers George and Hans.
The PP a large success was as previously mentioned, because it was those up to then first really useful pistol with double act ion departure. The police pistol enjoyed large reputation with the officials of lots of countries and by many agencies into completely Europe was introduced. A just as large triumph became 1931 the PPK (police pistol Kriminal), their dimensions still smaller was than those the PP. That made it particularly interesting for civil strips. Both models were not desired with the officers of the realm resistance, which the weapons had privately procured themselves, that were after 1933 at armed forces and Air Force different. After the war all production plants of the company Walther in Zella Mehlis of the Soviets were dismantled and all factory buildings were blown up, which were brothers Walther and their families however already in an American internment camp, from which they became to dismiss after three weeks. In the first postwar years the enterprise concentrated mainly on the production of office machines, from which soon its own enterprise developed under George Walther. Fritz however concerned himself still with the production of weapons and shifted its factory seat soon after Ulm, where he concentrated on the production of air pressure weapons. In the meantime it had sold the patent laws to the PP and the PPK to France, where the pistols were produced at the company Manurhin since 1952 for some time in series.
Since then it the company again permitted was to be manufactured sharp weapons, the PP and the PPK also again with Walther in series was manufactured. Because of the law situation in the USA one besides a PPK particularly for the American market sketched. This PPK/S is somewhat higher than the original. In addition there is one only 135 mm long bag pistol, the Walther TPH, based on the PPK, in the calibres of 22 and 6.35 mm of Browning. With the PP/PPK "load edition" ends with Walther in Ulm the production of this tradition-pregnant weapon.
In the meantime at the Hungarian company the series was given to PPK/E (the "E" stands for Europe) in order. Thus there are the PP and its variants now already more than 70 years and is still present it nevertheless. It was replaced as handgun of the police already before long time, the number of the owners of private rises however still and their concept, in all world, was often copied.
